    Description

Here is a very rare and very early 1868-70 closed mouth so called Motschmann or bisque hip bebe by Jules Steiner. She is about 17" tall and has perfect dome head on fixed shoulderplate with upper arms and shoulders. These were among the earliest of Steiner's bebes and the bodies were designed after Japanese dolls. This little dear has pale creamy bisque with tiny mouth, gentle eyebrows, no piecing in ears and light blue glass eyes. She has mohair wig. Her body has original cloth twill joints between bisque lower legs and lower arms. Right thumb has been reattached. There is a small firing line on butt from the making. One eye (left) has a small scratch. Here head and legs are intact. Her eyes are a beautiful sapphire blue. Some of the early Steiners with teeth are kind of scary looking but this little closed mouth cutie has closed mouth, a sweet face and nice round cheeks. She wears early gown, corset and underclothes, and early froufrou bonnet. I added some early wool hand knitted socks and a pair of my reproduction Steiner type boots so her feet don't get cold and don't clang together.
